History

1840
Mr. William O'Dell had the only home built of logs in what is today the Village of Merton.  The main street was a dry-wash gully and all the countryside was beautifully timbered with hardwood trees.  The Bark River was winding its way towards the Rock River in much the same way it does today except there wasn't a dam or millpond.  Instead of busy resort areas like today, our lake areas were still hidden jewels in deep forest.

1843
The Merton State Grade School was established in a log cabin on a slab foundation with D.S. Foote as the teacher and owner of the building.  He taught any and all students whose parents could afford to pay him to tutor.

1848
The District 6 Township of Warren, later named Merton, erected a school.  A white framed building was built on Huntington Street.  Later a brick building was placed on the site of the present intermediate school.  The school went from 100 students ranging from 5 to 20 years of age to today's enrollment in the primary school (4k through 4th grade) with 478 and in the intermediate school (5th through 8th grade) at 445.  The faculty consists of 78 teachers including specialty teachers.  The current administrator is Mark Flynn.

1922
The village was incorporated  with a population of 257.  The first president was William West Brown.  The board consisted of two trustees, a clerk, treasurer, assessor and constable and a justice of the peace.  The village proper was Main Street and a small section of Huntington Street then called Pigtail Alley to the west.  Today the village has a population of 1964 residents with 10 subdivisions and three more in the planning stage.

Currently the Village Board consist of the following positions:

bulletpresident
bullet4 trustees
bulletclerk-treasurer
bulletdeputy clerk-treasurer
bullethistorian
bulletmaintenance department (one full-time position, 5 part-time positions)
bullet3 school crossing guards
bulletbuilding inspection department
bullet7 member plan commission
bullet7 member election board
bullet5 member board of appeals

1917
The fire department started with fifteen members and one truck.  Today the department has forty members.  In 2003 the department will have their own ambulance to take care of all emergency medical needs.  The fire department was responsible for the purchase of Fireman's Park off of Main Street where they held carnival's in the 20's, 30's, 40's and early 50's.  They built the fire department and village hall on Sussex Road.

1930's & 40's
Summer outdoor movies were shown from the lawn of Mayhew's Ice Cream Parlor.  (The house south of Bogey's Tavern.)  People would sit across the street on Bies Hill (house south of the Clock Shop).  In the early 50's, the crowd got to be too large so they moved the free movies to the park.

1940's & 50's
The fire department purchased Fireman's Park and held a carnival in the park.  Many great times are remembered from these carnivals.

1992
On the village's 70th anniversary, the Village of Merton sponsored the Vietnam Moving Wall.  It was a wonderful experience with about 20,000 people viewing it during the week stay at the village hall.
