New Village Hall Information

Greetings Village of Merton neighbors and friends,

Things are moving forward on the new Village Hall and Community Center.  Here are some updates and a glimpse as to what you will see happening over the course of the next few weeks-

I’m pleased to let you know that we had a fair number of contractors submit proposals, with Absolute Construction Services of Racine being awarded the project. Not only were they the lowest qualified bidder, but they came in under our February estimate of $2.3 million by almost $100,000.  ACS has performed work over the years for many municipalities in southeast Wisconsin. All of their references gave glowing reports and we look forward to them spearheading the building’s construction.

We’ve been able to secure temporary office space in the western portion of St. John’s United Church of Christ at N76 W28321 Sussex Road, Merton (the corner of Main Street and Sussex Road).  We will have our own entrance, which is located to the far right as you enter the parking lot. Our office furniture was recently relocated and installed as well. This Friday, the 17th, we will be installing our computers and phone system, with office personnel reporting to duty at this location starting Monday the 20th. Our phone numbers and email addresses will continue without change. You patience is appreciated during this transition as we get unpacked and settled in.

The first noticeable sign of progress at the construction site will occur during the first week of October, when Lee Manufacturing of Muskego will be onsite with a crane to remove the bell from the steeple. Lee Manufacturing specializes in bell restoration and will be preparing ours for its relocation to its new home in the west-facing gable of the new building.

Once the bell removal is complete, any abatement of asbestos or lead that needs to occur will take place. Once this is completed, the building will be leveled and the site will be prepared for the new slab. It’s the goal of ACS to have the structure’s shell up and enclosed before the dead of winter so progress can continue inside.  We’ve been told to expect the construction process to take 9-12 months. We’ll be sure to provide updates and photos as progress is made.

Our Architects and consultants have worked tirelessly over the last few months to design a building that is not only esthetically appealing, but functional for our needs, both now and into the future. As we prepare for the centennial of our Village’s incorporation in 2022, we are excited to bring to life the new gathering space and administration offices that will be poised to take us through the next 100 years.

Additionally, we are in the process of planning a 100th Anniversary celebration, taking place September 16th-18th next year. Watch for information shortly on how to join the committee spearheading the event.

Warmest regards,

Ron Reinowski
